ABSTRACT: This study presents the large size anthropomorphic statuettes (more than 25 cm height). These were discovered in the site of Păuleni-Ciuc „Dâmbul Cetăţii”, Harghita County. The statuettes were made of clay and were discovered in fragmentary state. This paper is especially important since there are only a few objects of this type discovered within the Cucuteni-Ariuşd culture. Most of the “statuettes/ figurines/ idols” assigned to the Cucuteni-Ariuşd culture are medium-sized objects (8-25 cm).
At Păuleni-Ciuc archaeological site six fragments of large size anthropomorphic statuettes were discovered, including a statuette head, possibly miniature clay mask. Fragments of anthropomorphic clay statuettes were discovered during investigations on dwelling contexts, on the floor, near the walls and between the wall debris. In some cases the fragments are scattered at 10-12 m distance one from another. The tomographic analysis is combining the X-ray with advanced computer technology in order to create accurate and detailed images of the human body internal structure. The analysis was applied to the large size statuette from Păuleni-Ciuc (Inventory number 11288; Fig. 8/1-6) and confirmed that this type of statuetts were made of two large rolls of clay, pasted together by pressing. The surface of statuettes was very well smoothed and polished. The value of this study is resides in the fact that only few objects of the category „large size anthropomorphic statuettes” are known among the findings from Cucuteni-Ariuşd Culture (Phase A). For the moment there are no similar findings for the „miniature clay masks / mobile head statuette”. This object is unique within the Cucuteni culture in the western Carpathian area. Also, the assemblage of fragments belonging to large size anthropomorphic statuettes found at Păuleni-Ciuc is so far the largest discovered and investigated within the settlements of Cucuteni civilization.
